MSAA Professional Development Workshop for Principals, Assistant Principals, Department Heads, Guidance Counselors, and Aspiring Administrators

A Realistic Look at Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plans, Reducing Bullying and Social Conflicts in Schools

This workshop will explore behaviors that constitute bullying and behaviors that are not considered bullying. We will examine the law and the required components of the mandated Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan (BPIP) and what steps DESE's Problem Resolution Staff will initiate if they receive a "letter of concern" about an alleged bullying case.  Several case studies will be examined along with the latest research.

Educators will share how to reduce the incidences of bullying, and what to do when bullying and/or social conflicts occur. The tenants of a social-behavior diversionary program will be discussed, and how to immediately set-up a diversionary program in your school.

Participants will:

·         Discover what bullying is and what bullying is not

·         Compare several Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plans

·         Review the steps DESE takes when investigating a complaint

·         Explore several case studies and role-play as the decision-maker in each case

·         Establish plans to build a school-wide culture that reduces bullying

·         Decide how to best institute a Social-Behavior Diversionary Program to support students in need
