Check In/Check Out is a tier two intervention that supports the overall growth and development of students who are struggling behaviorally. This workshop will assist school staff members on ways to identify students needing this intervention, data collection and implementation of the program. This workshop will show the power of the program, and how administration is pivotal in supporting counselors, paras and teachers in implementation. The workshop will bring a hands-on opportunity to role play providing specific positive feedback to students to improve academic performance and relationships. |
Participants will: · Learn about a full structured behavioral intervention · Learn how to collect data to determine effectiveness of Check In/Check Out · Master Check In/Check Out implementation, behavioral charts, and fidelity · Practice how to give quick specific positive feedback to support student behaviors, and improve academic progress · Practice de-escalating power struggles and supporting emotional regulation · Engage in group discussion about the pros and cons of the program · Review and adapt a check in/check out manual for your school |

Brian Prehna | Kenneth C. Coombs School: Mashpee Public Schools Brian Prehna is the Assistant Principal at Kenneth C. Coombs School in Mashpee, Massachusetts. He has nearly two decades of experience in education and mental health services, holding a BA in Psychology, an M.Ed. in Psychology, and a CAGS in Educational Leadership and Management. His diverse career includes roles such as special education paraprofessional, residential counselor, school counselor, clinical supervisor, director of student culture, clinical trainer/consultant, and now assistant principal. Mr. Prehna has worked with students from preschool through young adulthood in a variety of settings, including rural, suburban, and urban schools, as well as residential schools and treatment facilities.
